Be prepared

3 Mar

Or is that a Boy Scout saying?

Cause these are Girl drinks.

I never joined any sort of Scouts, even the delectable sounding Brownies.

Because despite what I previously said in the title of an earlier entry, I’m not a joiner. Particularly if joining involved wearing a uniform.

Either way I am preparing you for a week and a half of no new gruel recipes by leaving you not one but two recipes to console yourself. I will be back a week from Monday with….WAFFLE WEEK! I’ll be waffling all sorts of non-waffle items so brace yourselves.

So, this week’s recipes.
These are bad, bad cookies.

Actually they are not cookies, but they are called Girl Scouts and they are bad.

As in naughty.

As in adult.

Downright dirty.

Well one is, the other one is the other is frozen.

Scout-y nonetheless.

Scouts spend their time perfecting Mrs. Robinson-style shots of themselves in mirrors while wearing pleather pants and sipping alcoholic shakes, right?

I outta start my own urban scout group. Nature hikes in Griffith at midnight.

Drink one:
Frozen Girl Scout(adapted from the 8500+ Drink and Cocktail recipes Free app)
Splash if chocolate almond milk(more it less depending on preferred thickness)
1 1/2 oz. green creme de menthe
1 c. Chocolate ice cream
Blendy blend blend. Sip and prepare thyself for…well in my case that Sunday night, Monday. Which I did by discarding most of the drink because although this drink was second to heaven I don’t drink alone and Monday was a Dippity doodah multiple audition day. But next time I have guests I will be recreating it again cause it was AMAZING.

As for the dirty gal. The Dirty Girl Scout was particularly dirty when I shaking it and the top flew off my shaker.

When a Scout’s top flies off…

Good thing it was tasty. Strong hit of the Kahlua and Bailey’s. I think the creme de menthe provides mainly color because it did nit taste terribly mint-y so don’t shy away if you are not into mint.

It matched one of my kitchen walls. Good thing when when the top came off. And it sprayed my kitchen.

Sorry, not you.

That was me responding to the innuendos in my mind.

FYI dictionary dot com says the plural of innuendo can be spelled with or without an e.

There, my mind is cleansed.

Dirty Girl Scout(from the iPhone Mixology App)
1 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 tsp. Green Creme de Menthe
1 oz. Kahlua
1 oz. Vodka
Shake over ice and strain. The recipe says to garnish with an orange slice but I was not so very prepared for that…

Look ma, I garnished: Pumpkin week day 3

20 May

Considerably more attractive than yesterday’s shake, eh? I am particularly excited for this Pumpkin Protein Shake, changed only a bit from Meals and Moves, because it is thanks to this blog that I discovered the wonders of xanthum gum. And as soon as I manage to find guar gum I hope to experience more shake magic. One of my complaints about protein shakes is that they either have too little body, or too much ice. How to get a thick, creamy texture without having to add ice? Use one of these gums. It makes your shake like almost like pudding. Liiiiiiike puddin’. So I’ll quit my yammering and give you the recipe I made last night:
Pumpkin Protein Shake(adapted-just barely-from Meals and Moves)
1 cup plain unsweetened almond milk
1 serving vanilla protein powder
1/2 cup pumpkin(from a can)
4 tsp. cinnamon
generous pinches of ginger and nutmeg
small pinch ground cloves
dash of vanilla
1/2 tsp. xanthum gum
sweetener to taste(is used a few packets of Equal-yeah I know its bad for you oh well)
Blend it up. Pour it in a glass and if you’re feeling frou-frou garnish with a dash of cinnamon and a shot of Reddi-whip. Love that stuff.

Oats in theory…day 2 of pumpkin week in spring

20 May

…in theory the idea of two of my favorite foods, pumpkin and oatmeal, together is swell. And with a bit of finagling I am betting I could make this shake sing. Perhaps even an aria.
Welcome to day 2 in Pumpkin Week in Spring!
Today’s recipe was the Healthy Pumpkin Oatmeal Shake from Gina’s Skinny Recipes
How I found it I do not remember…
Anyway, my main qualm was that this needed to be sweeter and perhaps pumpkiny-er. Other than that I enjoyed it.
Up next on Pumpkin Week: yet another blogger’s take on pumpkin shakes, this time with more protein.

Shakes then and now

8 Mar

Months ago I went through a fruit shake phase. One of the prettier shots of those shakes is this:

Note the pink martini glass. I purchased it as a graduation present for myself and happily drink everything from shakes to Gatorade to real cocktails from it when I wanna get festive by myself.
Also note the flowers. More red roses. I love those.
Now last week I suddenly craved a fruit concoction but the picture was taken after I’d started in on the shake and I was drinking out of a slightly less fancy glass and there were no roses:

So less pretty but equally yummy. And now my approximate shake recipe:
Equal parts frozen fruit(blueberries and cherries are favorites) and vanilla frozen concoction of your choice-ice cream, frozen yogurt, rice cream, they all work. I used an ice milk with a touch of maple in it. Add some vanilla protein powder if you like and if you like it really sweet like me add more sweetener to taste. Yes I added equal. I know it’s bad but hey, I at least kicked my diet soda habit…Now the shake secret is to also add some extract. Vanilla and almond are equally exceptional. If you have them some vanilla bean is magical. Add enough almond milk to make it as thin or thick as you like. Blend it all up with an immersion blender if you hate washing blender canisters like me and drink that goodness on up.
