Stop! New things!

10 Jul

Okay I know. Cocktails aren’t a totally new thing but they are a break in the wine content.

It’s bloody 107 degrees in Los Angeles as I write and a frosty cocktail is called for. A cute frosty cocktail. Garnished with a bottle of amaro.

I don’t normally drink tequila but when I do I get fancy. Reposado? Not too shabby.

I regret nothing.

I give you:

Ice-Berg

From Brad Thomas Parson’s “Amaro”

1 oz reposado tequila

1 bottle underberg

1 oz orgeat

3/4 fresh lemon juice

Blend with about a cup of ice. Rejoice.

Blue Marg- serve w chips and salsa

Fact: Margaritas should be served with chips and salsa. Soft salted pretzels are also okay if you serve the margarita unsalted. That works, my sweet babies.

More facts:

I am doing a staged reading of a spec script at a snazzy place with some good people to meet this coming weekend and I am excited because I am the “wise-cracking best friend”. So I get to make fun of people, including myself.

Fact: Margaritas should be served neat.

Fact: Margaritas require fresh lime juice. I know, there is a shortage. Shell out a spare penny, you spend more on crappy coffee and you deserve a good adult drink.

AND FINALLY

Fact: Margaritas are best when blue.

Don’t you sass me. Blue curaçao is the shiz-nit. And it is pretty and refreshing to look at. Like a stale browser, you need refreshing. Because–last fact: it got hot.

Blue Margarita from the Ultimate Bar Book by Mittie Hellmich (wording mine)
Lime wedge
Kosher salt
2 oz. blanco tequila (I used Sauza)
1 oz. blue curaçao
1 oz. Cointreau
1 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
Run lime wedge around chilled glass edge. Dip in salt. Put in freezer whilst assembling your drink. Shake up everything else with ample ice then strain into the glass. Serve with an extra slice of lime, big spender. You’re worth it.

Chupa, meet your cocktail namesake:

20120916-001300.jpg
Chupa was an excellent pet. Not my pet, but one I became close to over the last several years. There was nothing like being woken up by the Chup-ster. Someone in St. Louis put your hands over Java’s eyes lest he see that. I swear cats can read only the things you don’t want them to.
I came across a recipe for a drink called the chupa cabra and thusly made it in her honor. Then I googled it and found a lot of different chupacabra recipes, all wildly different, but they all had tequila. So even if you don’t make this, do a shot and send some cat love.

Here’s to you, Chupa!

Chupa Cabra(slightly adapted from the Mixology app)

2 oz. white tequila
1/2 oz. Campari
1/2 oz. lime juice
3/4 oz. ruby red grapefruit juice
1 tsp. sugar
Dash of angostura bitters
Slice of lime.
Shake everything but the lime slice with ice then strain.
